Universal teams with TuneCore to discover new artists

Well, this article is well written - its first paragraph is a better summary than anything I'll come up with.

Three of Universal Music Group's divisions have joined forces with digital distributor TuneCore to launch branded portals designed to help the labels discover new talent while simultaneously allowing the new acts the opportunity to sell their wares through leading digital retailers.

I guess I can add something. Those three major divisions are Universal Motown, Interscope/Geffen/A&M, and Island Def Jam.

YouTube Succumbs To Branding As Warner Music Begins Its Return

Warner's music videos will finally return to Youtube after Warner forced Youtube to remove all Warner content from the site, but with an unprecedented twist: branding that only Warner has had the negotiating power to win.

At this point it looks like only a fraction on Warner’s content has been reintroduced to the site, though we can likely expect more of it to come online in the next few weeks.

Verizon tests sending RIAA copyright notices

The move is significant for the music industry because among Internet service providers, Verizon has typically been among the most reluctant to intervene in copyright cases on behalf of entertainment companies.

"We recognize the importance of copyright and the need to enforce those copyrights," a Verizon spokesman said in a statement to CNET. "Without that enforcement, intellectual property won't be generated at all. At the same time, it's important for our customers to be assured that they won't have their privacy rights trampled."

Ticketmaster, Live Nation See Q3 Revenue Growth

As Ticketmaster and Live Nation await their merger approval from antitrust officials, both companies posted solid financial results for the third quarter of 2009. Live Nation said Monday that its net income fell by half to $69 million, but better sales of concert tickets sent revenue up 14 percent to $1.81 billion, which is up from $1.59 billion a year ago. Adjusted operating income of $160.8 million was up sharply from $109.5 million, and free cash flow of $123.2 million was nearly double the $64.4 million reported for the same quarter last year.

  • It's interesting that Live Nation CEO Mike Rapino doesn't address the merger at all. At least Ticketmaster's CEO, Irving Azoff, alludes to it: "We're rolling out a number of initiatives that enhance the fan experience, both online and at the shows, and that in the future will greatly improve the transparency of ticket pricing."
